Kommetjie

Private Commission

Kommetjie2

Kommetjie is a small, rugged area along the east coast of Cape Town. It can be windy sometimes and this is reflected in the waves as they come rolling onto the powdery, white sand. This piece was commissioned with the seascape in mind, and it captures the sense of movement and the cyclical nature of the tide as it crashes and subsides. This has a nice matt glaze finish and a subtle metallic surface that is highlighted by the shape and contours of each tile. The tilers who installed it said this was an unusual artwork and quite rare in South Africa. They were trying to encourage me to open for business in Cape Town but its a little out of my way.

Hello all! I have been a UAL Short Course tutor at CSM
As an artist working in clay, what does it mean to make work with local communities? How does the model differ when the artist is invited, rather than embedded in the community?
